Native plants

provide many different "ecosystem services". Native plants support the lifecycle of native insects, and the energy ingested by them gets passed up the food web to baby birds, and then their predators, etc. Native plants are the foundation of the system. The vast majority of insects require particular native plants to lay their eggs on, plants that their young will be able to eat (most other plants would be toxic) and complete their lifecycles on.

We've learned so much about this topic through reading and listening to presentations by the author of "Bringing Nature Home", Douglas Tallamy. He suggests we use native species of plants for 70% or more of our planted landscapes. We've seen first hand, that when the native species are planted, more birds will nest closer by, because the habit AND the source of caterpillars to feed their young are abundant.
